In "Life After Life" album we have put together full repertoires of DE MORTUS un ICONSTRAINTS whose members we both were in years 1997-1998 and 2003-2004 respectively. This is our first album to include data-CD which contains old versions of songs, radio edits, and even few new songs.

We formed MORPHOLARIA in 6th of June, 1996 and this is our first recording, rooted in consistently heavy music. Already in the very beginning we had decided that we're not gonna stay at 4/4 for long. We remember the funny fact that we recorded vocals independently from music. The start was like a start in best traditions, solos must be everywhere, even each of us doing own extended one.

2001 - "Embraced In Fear And Wonder"

Kā jau varbūt esat pamanījuši, Morfolatria ir ārkārtīgi talantīgā ģitārista Anša Markausa solo projekts, kurā ar visiem instrumentiem - ģitārām, taustiņiem, datoriem - viņš tiek galā vienatnē, jo tie, kas reiz bijuši viņa domubiedri un līdzgaitnieki, atraduši nodarbi citur. "Embraced In Fear And Wonder" ietilpst deviņas daudzveidīgas kompozīcijas, kas kopumā atstāj ļoti pozitīvu iespaidu (trīs no tām tapušas laikā, kad Ansis vēl nebija palicis viens). Lai arī esmu noklausījies šo albumu vairākkārt, neesmu tajā atradis nevienu pašu vāju vietu, ja neskaita faktu, ka Anša ģitāras (un fragmentāri arī taustiņi) ir vienīgais dzīvais instruments; viss pārējais ir rūpīgi un precīzi salikts uz datora, taču nav vajadzības raukt pieri, jo, piemēram, sitamie instrumenti izklausās diezgan autentiski. "Embraced In Fear And Wonder" skaidri apliecina, ka Ansis ir ne tikai viens no labākajiem (varbūt pat vislabākais) attiecīgā stila ģitāristiem šodienas Latvijā, bet arī salīdzinoši interesantas mūzikas autors. Paklausieties "Under Divine Control Part 2" vai "Aphrodisiac"! Var jau, protams, pārmest Ansim vēlmi tuvināties Dream Theater iedibinātajām kompozīcijas tradīcijām, tomēr "Embraced In Fear And Wonder" ietvertas arī vairāki īsi, eksperimentāli gabaliņi, kādi minētajai jeņķu supergrupai nav raksturīgi. Manuprāt, kompozīcijas ziņā mazliet pieviļ tikai 1998. gadā tapušā skaņdarba "Waiting For The Gone" versija, kas ir jūtami garlaicīgāka nekā citi gabali. Galu galā "Embraced In Fear And Wonder" ir ļoti tīkams, progresīvs albums, kuru iesaku noklausīties ikvienam vidēji sarežģītas instrumentālas rokmūzikas cienītājam (iegādājieties savu eksemplāru pa taisno no autora: ansism [at] lanet [punkts] lv). Savukārt mans vienīgais ieteikums Ansim ir atrast domubiedrus, ar kuriem kopā izveidot koncertējošu grupu - šī mūzika ir pelnījusi dzīvu izpildījumu!

Es labi atceros, kaa man tika pasniegts pirmais disks - ar vairaakkaarteejiem atgaadinaajumiem, ka "nekas iipashs jau nav" un "mums jau to iespeeju tik maz", utt. Toties pirms vairaakaam nedeeljaam daavaatais "Remeber To Phorget" tika pasniegts kluseejot un ar taadu zinaamu lepnumu aciis. To jau es uzskatiiju par labu ziimi. Pa starpu dzirdeejis dazhus demo ierakstus (bez vokaala), man bija skaidrs, ka Morpholatria staav krustcelees, un shis disks noraada uz gandriiz citu grupu, kaut arii tas joprojaam ir dueta (+ drum'n'bass computer) darbs. "RtP" ir konceptuaals darbs par, vulgaari sakot, "nenotikushu miilu", ar storiju iemestu pa vidu lirikai, bet galvenais tomeer ir taas muzikaalaas paarmainjas, kas skaarushas sho duetu. Ne veests no metaala. Nu jau labu laiku kaa sarukusi liidz duetam, Morpholatria sho albumu ierakstiija un mikseeja ar parasta datora paliidziibu. Morpholatria, vismaz manaa riiciibaa esosha demo ierakstiishanas laikaa, ir divi puishi, Raimonds Liepinjsh (kursh bildee izskataas peec 80o gadu beigu thrashera) un Ansis Markauss (abi - gjitaaras un vokaali), kuriem aiz muguras esot pabieza thrash un death muziceeshanas veesture. Tikai tagad gan vinji vairaak tiecoties uz tehniski-progresiivaam lietaam. Tas nebuutu slikti, shaadu grupu (ja neskaita varbuut death-njikus Neglected Fields) Latvijaa ir ai, cik maz... sho 1997. gadaa ierakstiito demo es sanjeemu ar neskaitamaam atrunaam gan par skanjas, gan par muuzikas kvalitaati, liidz ar to es to patureeju praataa, rakstot. Seshi treki, no tiem divi instrumentaalji. OK, par skanju nerunaasim, jo, ko tu, cilveeks, vari gribeet no maajas apstaakljos ierakstiita un peec tam uz kompja samikseeta demo? So, aizmirsti, cilveek, arii to, ka bass/drums/keys arii ir kompja gjenereeti... Cik noprotu, vinjiem ir piedaavaati ne viens vien saliidzinaajums, tachu, tie, kuri tika nosaukti man, nu ne kaadi te neiedereejaas. Vislabaak es to varu aprakstiit taa: Kiberthrash tipa Obliveon vai pat Voi Vod, auksti un mazuliet mehaaniski un industriaaliski, tomeer ne disharmoniski rifi, dazhas akustiskaas intonaacijas atsauc atminjaa Celtic Frost disku "Into The Pandemonium" (piemeeram, dziesmaa "Inhearsed Alive"). Liidervokaala kaa taada nemaz (un tas ir ljoti zheel), abi muuzikji izmanto visas savas balss iespeejas, runaajot / deklameejot / reecot / spiedzot / kliedzot, kaa vien veelaties. Sakariigi teksti, praktiski bez kljuudam un/vai neveikliem izteicieniem, dazhi citaati no Biibeles un Edgara Alan Po arii iepiiti. Labaakais paragraafs: "Death is a trap for the superstitious / Sidestep of stream is not an acquisition / Love can guide you to perfection / If only death could help you to attain..." Ja vajag kur piekasiities, tie ir instrumentaali, kuri, atvainojiet, vietaam izklausaas peec gjitaaras maaciibstundas vingrinaajumiem. Jaa, un es ceru, ka nu vinji tikushi pie labaakiem instrumentiem. Es pats veel 1987. gadaa uz Musimas speeleeju... Visumaa tas ir itin pieklaajiigs veikums, atsevishkjas vietas pat ne tikai pieklaajiigas, un, teiksim, Neglektjikiem arii buutu ko pamaaciities. Ceru, ka dzhekiem izdosies reiz savaakt nopietnu sastaavu, tipa, iekshaa ir, tagad tikai jaastumj aaraa. Vieniigi zheel, ka taadu muuziku es klausos visai maz, un liidz ar to manam veerteejumam varat arii neticeet. Baigaakais ir tas, ka tas viss man kaut ko atgaadina, uz meeles ir, bet nekaa, nekaa, neizdodas. Tachu ir sajuuta, ka es ko taadu esmu dzirdeejis manos death gados, t.i., 90o gadu saakumaa.

Uldis Šēns [ angliski, 2000.01.03 ]

Released way back in 1997, "Guidance To Quietus" is basically a showcase of two guitarists, both providing their vocal talents, and using IMBs for keys/bass/drums duties. Their cold and and somewhat mechanically and monotonous sounding riffs bring in mind Canadian cyberthrash unit Obliveon, coupled with Anacrusis (but without that punch) and even flirting with industrial shades, the latter may be due to undoubtedly electronic drums sound. There are no lead vocals per se, both guys taking their turns to scream, shout, roar, squeal and whine. There's a good deal of narration throughout the 24 mins recording, thus bringing around quite a surreal atmosphere. Both men are, by and large, free of the nuisance that plagues many a Latvian band - thick accent. Lyrics, another would-be plague, here vary from being reasonable to good, some excerpts from Bible and God Of Horror Edgar Allan Poe are used, and in a well done way, which again, sets them apart from not one local band. Incidentally, the opening track "Members" is the least spectacular (apart from the very beginning), mostly because of the lack of some sparkle or hook. "Where The Visions Are Buried" contains a nice guitar/synth break, albeit somehat rehashed, while "Inhearsed Alive" with its acoustic lead tells me the guys have been listening to Celtic Frost. The closing number, "Traces" is, I've been told, their fave track on the demo, and this would be the direction they'd like to head to now. It opens with the same sledgehammer riffs as rest of the gang, but in halfway adds to itself some nice complex nuances and some very reasonable solos, ending with acoustic break, and in the end, is surely the leader here.

Few shortcomings (apart from the sound, but for a home recording on absolute shoe-string budget it passes just fine) include both guitar solos that sound way too much like guitar exercises I myself strained (but never managed) to do 8 years ago. Those definitely are fillers. I wish there would be less spontaneity and more thoughtfulness involved, there are parts when it sounds like they just threw in the riff and/or solo they had just written, not caring how it looks in the scene but then again, that can be attributed to many records. I also wish they would finally get a real line-up together and kick some ass. They are capable of that, I felt it even underneath the blurry vision passing for "Guidance To Quietus"...

There's not much prog stuff in Latvia, but these HOLY LAMB are surely the pioneers of progressive rock stage. Lately HOLY LAMB has been even strenghtened by Ansis Markauss and Toms Circenis who had played together in ICONSTRAINTS.
